Daniel Pienaar win EP U/17 Provincial sevens

The second day of the Eastern Province Provincial Schools 7s tournament started off in freezing rainy and windy conditions, making play tough for the U/17s in Port Elizabeth.

There were too many handling errors and not enough smart play, but as the day proceeded, play improved. Early tournament favorites Framesby, Brandwag and Marlow made their way through their pools without losing a game, setting up a bail biting cup semi-final between Framesby and Brandwag.

The other two pool leaders were Marlow and Daniel Pienaar who went through to the cup. While Otto du Plessis, Grey High, Nico Malan and hosts Andrew Rabie went through to contest for the bowl, coming runner up in their respective groups.

The bowl semi-finals went the way of Grey and Andrew Rabie, with Grey taking the Bowl final, finishing 5th overall. While Nico Malan beat Otto du Plessis in the Shield final to take 7th.

The Cup final was contested between Brandwag and Daniel Pienaar after Framesby couldn't handle the pressure in their semi while Marlow threw it away at full time to Daniel Pienaar gifting them the win.

The Plate final went the way of Framesby fending off Marlow 14 - 10 for some sort of consolation. While the cup final kicked off with a bang with Brandwag taking an early lead, but Daniel Pienaar scoring a brilliant try on the stroke of half time to make 7 - 7. The second half was also hotly contested, both teams fighting to win the final. It was tough but Daniel Pienaar fought to score after the final hooter to win 21 - 14.

Overall it was a strong tournament with a lot of young talent on show and Daniel Pienaar did very well to take the title in the end.
